Dead Unawares

After many years of study, a missionary doctor discovered a cure for a terminal disease that was rife in many parts of Africa. The disease was largely responsible for a low life expectancy in many areas, and could be detected by a rash on the back of the neck.

The missionary doctor made the trip to Africa to take the cure, as well as the Gospel, to the tribes. In one particular village, he found that absolutely everyone in that tribe showed evidence of the rash on the back of the neck. 100% of the village were slowly dying from this disease. Good job a cure was at hand!

However, as the missionary went to treat the villagers and distribute the cure, no-one would take it. Because every single person in the village had the same rash in the same area, and due to lack of education and medical knowledge etc, nobody realised they were sick. The rash and resulting symptoms and effects of the disease were considered to be normal, and to be the normal way of life. The disease had been rife throughout the tribe for generations, and because of this, no one actually realised they were sick, and did not feel they needed a cure!

How easily this story can be applied in the Gospel. Since the fall of Adam, every single person born into this world is guilty of transgression of the Law of God. Each one of us have a disease...that disease is sin, and it’s end result is eternal death and destruction in the Lake of Fire. Do you realise you have a disease? We are born with it, there’s not a thing we can do about it, but praise God that in the Blood of Jesus Christ, there is a cure and a cleansing from sin.

Christian, this made me think about a very good point I heard recently at the Answers in Genesis lectures held in the Waterfront a month or two ago. Ken Ham talked about how in the book of Acts, the apostle Paul was aware of the audience whom he was witnessing to, and adapted the message of the Gospel so that it would be relevant to those he was witnessing to. Think about it – maybe you are trying to witness to your friends and telling them that Jesus can save them. But like the audience to whom Paul was witnessing, maybe your friends don’t understand what Jesus can save them from, or why they need saved!!! A bit like the tribe in Africa not realising they were sick.

Ken Hams point was this, Christian, be aware of those you are witnessing to. Don’t take it for granted that when you tell someone that Christ can save them from sin, that people will know what you mean. Sadly, today in Northern Ireland, many people don’t even realise what sin is, or why they are sinners and guilty before God. Start from the beginning...explain what sin is, explain why we are sinners, explain how God see’s sin and must punish sin, explain the mercy of Christ in providing forgiveness for Sin in Jesus Christ. Look at the example of Paul given in Acts 17 v 22 – 31. Perceiving that his audience was not versed in scripture like the Jews were, he began by talking of God as creator, that this God is responsible for all life, but because of our sin, we require Christ as Saviour.

Reader – are you dead unawares?

Sin is your terminal disease. Christ is the cure.
