Word for the Week

Sunday 19 August

Rev19:16
And he hath on his vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

King of Kings
New Page 1

This week saw the 30th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death. To many he is the king of rock and roll. This week saw 70,000 people converge on Graceland to show their respect for Elvis. He is often elevated like a god.

As a Christian we cannot agree with his music or his lifestyle. He was a man who lived for sin and in the end his life was cut short because of his lifestyle. Ultimately he was a man who reaped what he had sown.

He was a man who both played rock music but also sang some of the gospel greats. Elvis insisted on singing "Peace in the Valley" on the Ed Sullivan Show for his mother and even took gospel music into the International Hotel in Las Vegas, despite protests from the management.

Gospel singer J.D. Sumner recalls a woman approaching the stage in Vegas with a crown sitting atop a pillow and Elvis asking her what it was. She answered, "It's for you. You're the King." Elvis took her hand, smiled, and told her, "No honey, I'm not the King. Christ is the King. I'm just a singer."

Elvis was a man who knew the truth although he did not demonstrate it in his life publicly. It is reported that on the day before Presley died, Rick Stanley (Half brother) told Elvis that a friend of his was telling him about Jesus and how she was praying for him. "Elvis Presley, at 42 years old, looked at me and said, 'Ricky, she's telling you the truth.' Then he said, 'People who talk to you about Jesus really care.' I talked with Elvis for a while … then left to run an errand." When he returned to Graceland, Elvis was dead.

Over 8 years ago I was in Memphis and I went to Graceland. It was a strange experience. I saw all the trappings of a man who had made it in the worldly sense. But in the end he died alone. His body was broken through sinful abuse. I was able to look upon the grave where Elvis lay. He is dead.

Young person, Elvis was right in one thing, Christ is the King.

Christian let us never forget that we must put Christ at the centre of our lives. He is our King. We are to serve Him with our all. We are to cast ourselves upon the alter for Him.

Rom 12:1-2

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

Young person, serve God with your life, don’t leave Him the dregs of your life.
