A recent report stated that there are about 250,000 "problem gamblers" in the UK - but the numbers have remained steady since the last survey in 1999. When people whose sole form of gambling is playing the National Lottery are included, the amount of people gambling is 68%.

 

Gambling is a problem within society. To gamble is to hope to get something that you have not worked for. It’s to take a chance or a leap in the dark. I am sure you all know someone who gambles. The gambler is always looking to the future hoping for that win that will change their life. You will always hear of their wins but you will normally never hear of the loses.

 

Are you a gambler? Maybe you’re part of the 32% who does not gamble but are you gambling with your soul? Are you playing the card game of life? You know there is a heaven and that is the game you want to win.

 

Are you holding the religious card? Hoping that your attendance at church or participating in the sacraments of the church is the winning card. Does your card say “baptism”, the “Lords Supper” or “prayer” on it? Maybe you are holding the good works card hoping it is an enough to gain admittance into Heaven. Are you holding what you hope is the winning card of “deathbed repentance”? You cry aloud that the thief on the cross got to heaven. Yes he did but the other thief did not.

 

Are you gambling with your soul? King Agrippa was willing to gamble with his soul. He was willing to let the opportunity, we read of above, go. He hoped to play some different card later.

 

When the game of life is over what card will you show? When I die I will not show any of the above cards but I will show the gift that God gave me. This gift is called eternal life.

 

Rom 6:23 - For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.

 

Christ died that we might have this gift. (See Romans 5:8) You might have a full hand today but you do not have eternal life. You can have eternal life if you only ask for it. Romans 10:13 - For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
