Word for the Week

Monday 1 January

Isaiah 58:13-14
If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words: Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it .

Sunday. What day is it to you?
New Page 1

Sunday to many is a family day. It is a day to visit and to enjoy the company of others. To some it is a day to catch up on those outstanding jobs that need to be done around the house. Many people go shopping to get that new item of clothing or their weekly grocery needs.

There are many who do all these but still seek to attend a place of worship. Some do this because of how they were bought up; for others it salves their conscience.

Northern Ireland has had a long history where God and His Day have been revered. The majority of people used to fear God in Northern Ireland. They were bought up to have everything prepared on Saturday night before the “Sabbath”. Shoes were polished and food was prepared before the Lord’s Day.

This week has seen another attack on the Christian Sabbath. Please note the following report in the Belfast Telegraph:

Sunday football has been given the green light by the Irish FA following an overwhelming vote at last night's EGM to give clubs and individuals the choice to play or not to play.

Despite resolute opposition from the 'Never on a Sunday' brigade, the members were persuaded by those who argued that any ban was simply unsustainable legally or under FIFA statutes.

It is a sad day when the rules of man destroy the commands of God. Will this ruling help make Northern Ireland better? Maybe it will attract more tourists or bring in more money but it will not make us more spiritual.

Can we blame the IFA for this? Yes we can point the finger at them but as one minister once said, “the finger to you and the thumb to me”. How do we stand on our Christian Sabbath observance? We no longer take the same stand our forefathers did.

You don’t have to listen too hard, on a Sunday, to hear the football chat among our young people or the talk of weekly business from the older ones. Maybe this ruling has been because we have watered down the standards of God’s word.

Young person do you call the Sabbath a delight or are you too preoccupied doing your own things? Maybe it is time to go back and find the old paths.

Jeremiah 6:16 – Thus saith the LORD, Stand ye in the ways, and see, and ask for the old paths, where is the good way, and walk therein, and ye shall find rest for your souls. But they said, We will not walk therein.

Remember the example of Eric Liddell. Eric Liddell of Scotland refused to run a heat at the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris because the race was scheduled on a Sunday, which his faith taught him would violate the Sabbath.

As we know from the Academy Award-winning film, "Chariots of Fire,'' Liddell managed to negotiate an unheard-of switch from the 100-metre race he had been scheduled to run to the 400 metre, for which he had not trained, later in the week. On July 11, 1924, Liddell won that race and was showered with Olympic glory.

Strive to win the race of life and receive the well done of our Saviour.
