Word for the Week

Monday 9 June

Proverbs 25:11
A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver

Words – what a mouthful

There is one thing that is common to each one of us and that is that we all like to talk. We like to tell others about something that has happened to us, and we like to talk to others about all the things that may have happened to them.

Our English language is full of very expressive words which we use on a daily basis to convey our feelings, our emotions and hopes.

Talking is not only common but I believe that it is also good. There is something very special about the sight of groups of people together talking, maybe discussing the weather, the job or the football. Talking can often relieve some anxiety or care in our life, we are often told not to bottle up our feelings but rather to share them with others because by so doing it allows us to open up and seek someone else’s advice and comfort.

BT ran a TV ad campaign some time back and their slogan was, ‘It’s good to talk’. Of course they wanted us to talk on the phone for long periods of time to our family, our friends in order to run up our bill and so up their profits, but the sentiment of their slogan is for the most part correct, it is good to talk.

But we also need to be careful of what we talk about and the way in which we talk. While words can be very encouraging, yet the wrong words, said in the wrong can be very hurtful to someone. We should not fill our conversations with idle gossip about something that has happened to an individual that we know, we should never seek to bring someone else down by talking about them in a demeaning way. That person of whom we may be talking about may be hurting deeply inside and our words will only add to their pain.

With this thought in mind the wise King Solomon uttered those most beautiful words on Proverbs 25:11 – A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in pictures of silver.

In other words Solomon is saying that the right word, spoken in the right way, is like a beautiful picture of golden apples, framed a beautiful silver frame. Just as this picture is lovely to look at and brings pleasure to the eye, so the right word that is spoken in the right way is beautiful and brings delight the ear.

Young people, this week in all the conversations that you have, just be careful of what you say and more importantly of how you say it. Don’t let your words this week be used to hurt another person, but rather may you chose your words wisely and considerately and let your words be used to encourage and to support maybe someone who needs your help and encouragement.

No better way could we spend our time in conversation this week, than speaking to someone about our Saviour, telling them of His Great love for the lost and how that he died on the cross to take away our sins. Telling someone this week of their need of Gods so great salvation, would be a word fitly spoken and even this week you may have the joy of seeing that person saved, all because of the words that you spoke to them.
