Born and raised in a Christian home, Heather Watson trusted the Lord as her own and personal Saviour as a child of 7. Heather attended Omagh FPC, where she became increasingly active in the Youth Fellowship and the Sunday School, amongst many other things including CEF.
Heather has heard and responded to the 'call of God' into full-time Christian work. Heather stepped out on the promise of God and enrolled to study Bible Studies at New Tribes Mission Bible College in England.
I would just like to leave some points for prayer with you all, and I hope you will remember me in your prayers. Thank-you.
Thursday 3 May
I’m glad that I have the opportunity to share with you how I came to the Lord and how God has kept me since that. My name is Heather Watson. I am the youngest of three children, having two older brothers. I had the privilege of being born into a home where both my parents were Christians but yet like everyone else I was born in sin. I’m thankful that my parents were saved and for the influence that they had on my life. I can never remember a time when I didn’t know about the Lord Jesus. From an early age I was brought to church each week, I went to Sunday School twice on a Sunday and also to a weekly Good News Club which was in our house. In each of these places I was faithfully taught the Word of God.
It wasn’t until I was seven that I came to realise my own personal need of a Saviour. Around that time I remember lying in bed before I went to sleep and I used to think what it would be like when Jesus came back again. Even though I was only seven, I knew my parents and my two brothers were all Christians and that if Jesus came back that night I wouldn’t go to Heaven along with them. One evening before I went to bed my Mum was reading to me from the Bible and after she had read a section from a Daily Readings book she started asking me some questions. We had read about a boy who thought he could get to Heaven by good works until one day his Sunday School teacher pointed out his need of salvation. Mum then asked me if I had ever thought about getting saved and I said I wanted to get saved that night because I wanted to go to Heaven. That night I very simply knelt at my bedside and prayed. I remember telling the Lord Jesus that I was sorry for my sin and asking Him to take control of my life. I knew that God had forgiven my sin and changed my life.
I continued attending Church, Sunday School and Good News Club. I had already been in the habit of reading my Bible each night and using Bible Reading Notes so I continued doing this. This undoubtedly helped me to grow as a Christian. When I was 9 I attended my first, of many, Child Evangelism Fellowship Camps. This was a great source of encouragement to me. The teaching to Christian children was always very relevant and applicable. It was at camp that I first prayed in public and it was at a camp bonfire when I first testified. As I grew older I attended and got involved in the Youth Fellowship and also Senior Youth Challenge. These were also a great source of blessing and encouragement to me which helped me to grow in my Christian life. There were many times over the years that I failed God. Perhaps I failed to take my stand for Him or missed opportunities to speak about Him but I can testify that He never left me. From I was 15 or 16; I gradually became involved in helping at Good News Club, Five Day Clubs and Camps with Child Evangelism Fellowship. After graduating from Queen’s University as a teacher, I did some substitute teaching and then began teaching in a local Primary School.
While I was teaching I continued to work with CEF as a volunteer. I also served on the Youth Fellowship committee for a number of years. I was often challenged about how I was serving God but as I prayed I was sure I was in the place where God wanted me to be at that time. After attending an Easter Conference in 2005 I was very challenged about serving God in a full-time way and felt that I wouldn’t be in teaching much longer. A few days later, while having my regular Quiet Time, I felt the call of God into full-time Christian work through the words of John 21:15-17. The call of God was confirmed to me a few weeks later at a meeting where the speaker spoke on Matthew 9:35-38. The words of verses 37 and 38 spoke particularly to me and I knew it was time for me to take the next step. After discussing this with my family and with the National Director of CEF I was recommended to consider studying at Bible College. After praying much about this I applied to the New Tribes Mission to do their course in Biblical Studies.
I commenced studying at the college in September 2006. The Biblical Studies course is designed to establish believers in the foundational truths of the Bible and deepen their walk with the Lord. A variety of subjects are covered including Pentateuch, Minor Prophets, Bible Study Methods, Life of Christ, New Testament Epistles, Christian Life and Bible Memorisation. Students also participate in a practical programme 3 afternoons a week. Throughout my time here I have been very conscious of the Lord’s help and have also appreciated the prayerful support of many friends and relatives. I have been accepted as a candidate for Child Evangelism Fellowship. In September (DV) I will go to Kilchzimmer in Switzerland to take the Leadership Training Institute.
